SPEAKERS.

The Forum brought together professionals from different disciplines, institutions, and countries, whose contributions enriched academic exchange and interdisciplinary dialogue.


Among the invited speakers were the Dr. Carl Olden, member of the AAFP Board of Directors; the Dr. Judith Tintinalli, professor and Founding Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of North Carolina; the Dr. Robert Suter, President of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and former President of the International Federation for Emergency Medicine (IFEM); the Dr. Terry Mulligan, Director of the International Emergency Medicine (IEM) Program; and the Dr. Kenneth Iserson, Professor Emeritus of Emergency Medicine at the University of Arizona and author of numerous scientific articles and books.


Among the representatives from Latin America were the Dr. Marcos Ymayo (Brazil), the Dr. Juan Pérez Wulf (Venezuela), and the Dr. José Antonio Rojas Suárez (Colombia). The Forum also featured participation from authorities and experts of Mexico’s Ministry of Health, including the Dr. Pablo Antonio Kuri, the Dr. Eduardo Pesqueira Villegas, and the Dr. Cuitláhuac Ruiz Matus.

Dr. Carl Olden

Maternal safety

Dr. Carl R. Olden, MD, FAAFP is a family physician in Yakima, Washington. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Family Physicians. He has served as the United States representative on the International Council of the International Federation for Emergency Medicine and is a former president of the American Association of Emergency Physicians.

Dr. Renate Savich

Neonatal resuscitation

Dr. Renate Savich is Professor of Pediatrics and Chief of the Division of Neonatology and Newborn Services at the University of New Mexico Medical Center. She is the author of scientific publications and books and has served as a leader in neonatal resuscitation and newborn care initiatives in Latin America.

Dr. Agustín Lara Esqueda

Dr. Agustín Lara Esqueda was a Level I member of Mexico’s National System of Researchers from 2005 to 2017. He has demonstrated social and educational impact in rural communities through public health and tele-education programs. He is an active member of various academic associations and the author of multiple publications.

Jefferson Leigh, MSN, CEN is President of the Board of Directors of the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) of the United States. He has participated as an international speaker in courses and has collaborated in the development of emergency nursing programs. He is an active member of the Academy of Emergency Nursing.

Dr. Haywood Hall

PACE MD: A history of impact

Dr. Haywood Hall is an innovator. He attended Brooklyn University in New York City and completed his medical degree at Yale (1986). He completed his Internal Medicine residency at Emory University in September 1990. He served as Head of the Department of Emergency Medicine and of the AAFP in Mexico, as well as a founding member of the Mexican Society of Emergency Medicine. He is currently the Executive Director of PACE MD.

Dr. Pablo Antonio Kurí Morales

Dr. Pablo Antonio Kurí Morales graduated from UNAM as a Medical Doctor. He holds a Master’s degree in Social Medical Sciences with an emphasis in Epidemiology and Health Administration. He is currently Director of the National School of Public Health at the National Institute of Public Health (INSP). He has participated in research projects in health and epidemiological surveillance in Mexico and Latin America.

Dr. Nieves is faculty for the ALSO course endorsed by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). He coordinated and serves as editor of the Spanish manual for the ALSO course since April 2017. He is Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Guadalajara and Medical Deputy Director of the State of Mexico.

He is a physician and Professor of Emergency Medicine at St. Luke’s / Missouri. He has been a speaker at an international congress aimed at improving emergency medicine in East Asia. He has researched and presented on how to review manuscripts and abstracts, as well as on clinical decision-making in the emergency department.


His research focuses on criteria for the early diagnosis of sepsis in the emergency department and medication-related issues, including drug interactions that constitute critical emergencies.

Dr. Larry Leeman


Dr. Leeman is Professor in the Departments of Family and Community Medicine, Obstetrics, and Gynecology. He is currently Administrative Editor of the Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) program for the AAFP. He is board-certified in Family Medicine and completed a fellowship in Obstetrics. He directs the maternal-child health service of Family Medicine and fellowship programs and serves as Co-Medical Director of the Mother-BBaby Unit at UNM Hospital. He is Medical Director of the Milagro Program, which provides prenatal and maternity care services to women with substance use disorders.
